The usual group turned up for the monthly demonstration at Campsfield Immigration Detention Centre on May 26th, but this time they surprised Group 4 by sticking around. A couple of dozen people set up camp on a patch of waste ground less than 100 yards from the main gate and a small group has been there ever since, holding noise demos outside the fence every evening, decorating the driveway with banners and generally putting the wind up Group 4.

The happy campers have so far made several incursions into the compound, including one in which several people climbed onto the roof of building and played music until they were chased out. In another incident, a protester slipped into the site through a side gate left unlocked by builders, and was menaced with a spade by one of the builders (who obviously considered it his patriotic duty to prevent anyone helping those dangerous malcontent asylum seekers imprisoned at Campsfield) before being dragged out by Group 4. In another incident, a hole mysteriously appeared in the perimeter fence but was unfortunately noticed by Group 4 before it could be used. The police were called, but went away disappointed at not being able to arrest anyone: the pixies had melted into the night. Smaller actions have been ongoing - the signs leading to the site have been subverted to read 'Campsfield Prison' and there has been considerable local press interest.
The camp urgently needs more people to keep it going - why not pop up
for the night?
It's a pleasant site, with trees and access to running water, and is an effective means of providing moral support to the detainees, locked up arbitrarily and indefinitely in what appears to be a hostile country.
